Business Developer Medical Technology
As a business developer at IXA, you play a key role in the innovation process for new diagnostics and treatments. You work closely with researchers to identify promising inventions at an early stage and create valorization plans to bring these ideas to market. Most innovations in your portfolio will focus on medical technology, with particular attention to imaging, software, and e-health.
You connect researchers, companies, and investors to determine the best route to market. You translate research questions from external partners into collaboration opportunities for internal scientists. By attending (inter)national conferences, you build a strong network in the medical technology sector. You mainly collaborate with the departments of radiology & nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, and biomedical engineering & physics at Amsterdam UMC. With your expertise in medical technology and AI, you may also support innovations from other departments as needed. Your overarching goal: maximizing the impact of scientific knowledge and working together for better patient care.
Key responsibilities:
- building and maintaining strong relationships with clinicians and researchers;
- assessing inventions for commercial and societal value;
- supporting patent filings;
- coaching and supporting entrepreneurial researchers in early-stage business development;
- negotiating licenses and collaboration agreements with spin-offs and existing companies;
- proactively identifying partners through market research and (inter)national partnering events;
- aligning external research questions with internal expertise and capacity;
- working with clinicians, researchers, and legal and financial teams within research support to develop agreements, budgets, and timelines in line with Amsterdam UMC interests.
You have a master’s degree (MSc) and a strong interest in medical technology, especially in medical imaging, and you can quickly adapt to new application areas. You are self-organizing, flexible, and creative in finding solutions to drive innovation forward. You manage multiple valorization projects at once. You combine a commercial, results-driven mindset with excellent communication skills; private sector experience is a plus.
Additional assets:
- experience in (bio)medical technology;
- an MBA and/or relevant business development experience;
- experience with startups and venture building;
- a relevant network in medtech/life sciences and connections with venture capital firms;
- a PhD in a relevant life sciences field;
- knowledge of MDR and/or IVDR;
- understanding of intellectual property;
- contract negotiation and drafting experience;
- broad interest in various medical indications;
- affinity with financial and legal issues;
- strong motivation to advance patient care by connecting academia and the market;
- excellent command of English (written and spoken) and sufficient Dutch to participate in team meetings.
This role requires a broad understanding of commercial activities in relation to science, the current clinical trials landscape, investment options for spin-offs, and the introduction of biomarkers, diagnostics, and devices to the market. You are also familiar with research agreements, patent strategies, and clinical development strategies. Alongside your in-depth knowledge of the medtech sector, you balance business intuition and strategic insight with the drive to develop new opportunities.
- One-year contract with the prospect of a permanent contract.
- Classification in salary scale 11, 12: € 4.987 to € 7.684 gross for full-time employment (depending on education and experience). In addition to a good basic salary, we offer 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Calculate your net salary here.
- Holiday hours: 194.4 per year based on full-time employment and possibility to save additional hours.
- 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs. If you travel by foot, bicycle, or car, a mileage allowance of €0.21 per km applies (up to a maximum of 40 km one way by car).

As business developer at Amsterdam UMC, you will join Innovation eXchange Amsterdam (IXA), the knowledge transfer center for Amsterdam UMC. Most of your colleagues at IXA are also business developers (around 20, see www.ixa.nl), supported by legal and financial experts, each dedicated to a specific research institute or department, all available as sparring partners. You will spend much of your time working directly with researchers at Amsterdam UMC, especially those who are alert to research opportunities and innovative discoveries.
