The project

Amsterdam UMC Research BV is recruiting a motivated research assistant to contribute to a research project focused on improving lifestyle and brain health. The study initially targeted individuals with a Turkish, Surinamese-Hindustani, or Dutch background. Due to its success, the project is now being expanded to include people with a Surinamese-Creole and Chinese background.

Improving risk factors such as high blood pressure, overweight and obesity, diabetes, and physical inactivity may help reduce the risk of dementia and cardiovascular disease. To support participants in making sustainable lifestyle changes, we have developed a smartphone application tailored to the language and cultural background of its users.

The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this app in promoting health and general well-being among the target population.

At present, we are specifically looking for a coach to support and guide participants with a Chinese background.

About your role

As a Chinese lifestyle coach and research assistant, you will support participants in improving their lifestyle while contributing to scientific research on brain health and dementia prevention. You will work within a research project evaluating a specially developed smartphone app that has been tailored to the language and cultural background of its users.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • performing research-related administrative tasks, such as enrolling participants and completing and reviewing questionnaires;
  • supporting participants in setting and achieving personal health goals through the app;
  • providing remote lifestyle coaching through chat-based communication and motivating participants to make sustainable lifestyle changes;
  • helping participants address risk factors such as high blood pressure, overweight and obesity, diabetes, and physical inactivity;
  • identifying challenges participants encounter when using the app and contributing ideas for potential improvements.
About you

You have an interest in health, lifestyle, and the Chinese community. You enjoy motivating people to make positive changes in their lives. In addition, you:

  • hold a completed vocational education diploma (mbo level 4 or equivalent), preferably in lifestyle coaching, health, healthcare, social care, or a related field;
  • have an excellent command of Cantonese, both spoken and written. Proficiency in Mandarin and Dutch is a plus;
  • have a positive and motivating attitude and are able to encourage and support people in making behavioral changes;
  • have experience with motivational interviewing, or are willing to learn and apply this coaching approach;
  • enjoy working with adults between the ages of 50 and 75.
Our offer
  • You will be employed by Amsterdam UMC Research BV.
  • A contract for 12 months, with the possibility of a 6-month extension.
  • Classification in salary scale 7: € 3.126 to € 4.182 gross for full-time employment (depending on experience). In addition to a good basic salary, we offer 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Calculate your net salary here.
  • Holiday hours: 194.4 per year for full time and a possibility to save additional hours.
  • 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs. If you travel by foot, bicycle, or car, a mileage allowance of €0.21 per km applies (up to a maximum of 40 km one way by car).
