Why do some researchers adopt Open Science (OS) practices while others do not? And how does the research culture within departments influence these behaviours? These questions are central to the Shaping Open Science Culture (SOSC) project, funded by Open Science NL.
As a postdoc, you will investigate how research environments shape the uptake of open science practices such as open data, open methods, and preregistration. The project combines metascience, behavioural science, and research culture interventions to better understand how open science can become standard practice within academia.
The project consists of two complementary phases. In the first year, you will analyse publication behaviour of early-career researchers in the Netherlands who changed departments after completing their PhD. Using publication records, you will study whether researchers adopt or abandon open science practices after moving to a new research environment. In the second year, you will design and evaluate low-cost departmental interventions aimed at strengthening open science culture through peer accountability, shared commitments, and social recognition.
The SOSC project is a collaboration between Amsterdam UMC, VU Amsterdam, Tilburg University, and Eindhoven University of Technology, within the Netherlands Metascience Coalition.
As a postdoc, you will coordinate and execute the project from data collection to implementation and dissemination. You combine quantitative research with practical intervention development and collaboration across institutions.
Your work includes:
This role offers substantial freedom and responsibility within a collaborative national research network.
We are looking for an independent and collaborative researcher with a strong interest in metascience and research culture.
You have:
In addition, you work proactively, enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration, and are motivated to translate scientific insights into practical change.

You will work at the department of Ethics, Law and Humanities at Amsterdam UMC under the supervision of Joeri Tijdink. And in close collaboration with Tamarinde Haven (Tilburg University), Jost Sieweke (VU Amsterdam), Daniel Lakens (Eindhoven University of Technology), and Roman Briker (WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management)
You become part of the Netherlands Metascience Coalition, a national network of researchers from twelve Dutch universities working to strengthen transparency, openness, and quality in science. The collaboration brings together expertise from metascience, behavioural science, organisational science, and research integrity.
The team offers an open, collaborative, and intellectually stimulating environment with substantial room for initiative and professional development. You will have a central role in shaping both the scientific direction and the practical impact of the project.
The Department of Ethics, Law and Humanities is a department focused on reflection on science and healthcare. We do this through four sections: Ethics Support & Research Integrity, Ethics of Care, Health Law, and Participation & Diversity. The department has approximately 75 staff members who are involved in teaching, research, and valorisation. Engagement and enthusiasm for our work characterise the people in this department. We work in teams, both in teaching and in research. We also collaborate closely with Xendens, which is part of the department. Xendens is an expertise centre through which we offer a range of training programmes to audiences beyond students — including moral case deliberation (often for external parties) and a Research Integrity course for all PhD candidates at Amsterdam UMC. As a postdoc, you will become part of the Research Integrity section, where we provide both teaching and research on research integrity — with reproducibility and research culture as key themes
