The project

Stroke care is developing rapidly with the introduction of novel treatment approaches and the possibilities offered by medical imaging. The current acquisition of large, longitudinal, multimodal databases enables the development, test, and validation of novel risk scores and treatment-response models, and the systematic analysis of patients accounting for multiorgan (brain, heart) data which can help to gain better insight into the disease.

At the same time, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in healthcare offers promising opportunities for both patient care and medical research. In healthcare, AI tools can take advantage of the currently available large clinical datasets and be used to optimize patient’s diagnosis, develop risk models, and personalize patient treatment. In the large European research consortium UMBRELLA, including academic institutes, hospitals, and industry from 10 countries, we are investigating how we can utilize these large (distributed) datasets to create AI models to improve stroke patient care and how these can bring added value in clinical practice.

  • Develop and evaluate 4D (3D + time) AI models for the automated analysis of CT images to identify causes of stroke.
  • Make use of the available large, multimodal distributed databases to build AI prediction models of patient outcome. Analysis of dynamic, multiorgan radiological images made during stroke will be of great importance.
  • Contribute to the development of novel federated learning methodologies and computer vision approaches.
