The project

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD candidate (promovendus) to join the Tracer Center Amsterdam (TCA). The successful applicant will contribute to an NWO-funded research project focused on the development of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) tracers targeting a protein involved in neuroinflammation. This highly interdisciplinary project spans medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, radiopharmaceutical chemistry, and molecular imaging, with the aim of elucidating the role of this protein in brain diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. As a PhD candidate, your primary responsibility will be the design, synthesis, and radiolabeling of ligands with distinct pharmacological profiles, followed by the investigation of the target protein in both in vitro and in vivo models. You will become part of a multidisciplinary team at TCA and collaborate closely with research groups at Vrije University Amsterdam.

About your role

As a PhD candidate in this project you will:

  • design and synthesize biologically active compounds targeting the protein of interest;
  • radiolabel selected compounds with tritium and PET radionuclides (fluorine-18 and/or carbon-11);
  • perform autoradiography, binding studies, and functional in vitro assays;
  • work closely with our collaborators;
  • present your findings at scientific meetings, symposia, and international conferences;
  • contribute to teaching activities and supervision of BSc and MSc students.
About you

We are looking for an ambitious and motivated candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • a MSc degree in medicinal chemistry or a closely related discipline;
  • demonstrated experience in synthetic organic chemistry;
  • a strong interest in drug/tracer development;
  • the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment;
  • excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
Our offer
  • The intended start date for the project is September 1, 2026.
  • You will be employed by Amsterdam UMC Research BV.

About your workplace

The department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine is, amongst others, specialized in conducting research using nuclear imaging techniques, more specifically PET. Our aim is to use PET for diagnosis of disease, treatment monitoring and patient selection. TCA develops the new PET tracers needed in the clinic for neurological and/or neurodegenerative diseases, as well as oncology, rheumatology and cardiology. The research of TCA focusses on radiochemistry methodology development, selection of biological targets and development of new PET tracers for these targets, preclinical in vivo evaluation of new PET tracers as well as good manufacturing practice (GMP) compliant synthesis of PET tracers. TCA is now located in the Amsterdam UMC Imaging Center that is equipped with a brand new lab for TCA according to current state of the art. At the Imaging Center all imaging modalities are brought together and the synergy between basic research, pre-clinic and clinic will be further enhanced. TCA collaborates with many national and international research institutes and pharmaceutical companies and is partner in many (inter)nationally funded projects, amongst others,  ERC, NWO, ZON-MW, IHI, MJFF, EU and EU Marie Curie program.

Amsterdam UMC wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background. Working at Amsterdam UMC means working in an inspiring and professional environment where the development of talents and skills is strongly encouraged. We therefore offer you many opportunities for personal development, additional courses and a place to grow.
