    Wat ga je doen?

    Thematic area 1: Metabolite dynamics and liver-centered organ crosstalk. A plethora of signals comes from the intestine in the form of metabolites produced by the microbiome with food as the source. Different types of food or food components are associated with improved health or with disease. Similarly, dysbiosis, or an aberrant intestinal microbiota composition and function, associates with many diseases. The liver is the first organ to detect and integrate the signals from gut-derived metabolites and plays a dominant role in controlling their spatial and temporal signalling. The ultimate goal of this research project is to exploit intestinal-derived signals by modulating hepatic metabolite uptake and/or catabolism to prevent or target common metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, NAFLD and atherosclerosis.

    Thematic area 2: The overall aim of this research area is the development of novel treatment strategies for inherited liver disorders. Historically, the department is very strong in development of viral vector based gene therapy. We will be moving towards gene repair and gene editing using  lipid nanoparticle (LNP) vectors to deliver Cas RNA or protein guide RNAs. Furthermore, we will explore translation of technological advancements in (temporal) gene-modification also to other applications beyond rare inherited disorders.

    Wat neem je mee?

    We are looking for a highly driven, motivated and enthusiastic researcher with:

    • A PhD in a field related to biomedical molecular sciences.
    • Interest in innovative technologies and pushing the boundaries of research through technology-driven applications;
    • Experience with in vitro and in vivo models. Experience with advanced ex vivo models (precision cut liver slices, organoids, perfusion systems) is a strong advantage.
    • A flexible, pro-active team spirit but you can also work independently;
    • Excellent communications skills in English, both written and verbal.
    • A strong collaboration network.
    •  A strong publication record in prestigious international journals.
    Wat bieden we jou?
    • The unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary international translational research team.
    • Access to, and training in, state-of-the-art technologies in biomedical research.
    • A dynamic working environment in which quality, professionalism and team spirit are encouraged (with English as the main language).
    • Training in project management (e.g., supervision of students, budget management).
    • The position is for 3 years. We first offer a fixed term contract for 1 year, which under normal circumstances will be prolonged with 2 years. You are encouraged to develop your own independent group in the final part of this project and long-term career opportunities are present if successful.
