Project Summary

MCCF is the powerhouse for high-end microscopy and cytometry equipment of the VU/VUMC campus. Amongst the instrumentation available for users are several conventional (Attune NxT, Attune CytPix, and BD Fortessa) and spectral (3 Cytek Auroras) analyzers, advanced sorters (BD Influx and BD AriaFusion), and a mass cytometer equipped for analysis of cells in suspension (Helios) and tissue (Hyperion).

MCCF represents a key asset for the different departments and research institutes at the VU/VUMC campus and supports research in multiple fields including Immunology, Cancer, Neuroscience, and Cardiovascular Sciences.

MCCF collaborates with several key manufacturers and it is active in the international cytometry scene by organizing and participating in courses and international conferences.

About your role

A position is vacant for a senior core facility operator as member of the Microscopy and Cytometry Core Facility (MCCF).

  • In this position you will supervise daily operations in the facility, coordinate a team of core facility operators, provide technical and scientific support, and train researchers on the use of cytometry equipment and the associated analysis methods.
  • You will implement projects for method development and innovation in the field of advanced cytometry and will provide advice to researchers on the use of the appropriate techniques fitting their scientific needs.
  • Also, you will scout for new developments in the field of cytometry and provide advice to the department on possible new cytometry techniques and equipment.
  • You will keep up to date on recent developments in the field of cytometry by attending relevant (international) symposia, you will maintain contacts with suppliers and your network, and conduct literature research.
  • You will also advise and guide researchers, have contacts with both national and international experts, and organize and give practical training in the field of advanced cytometry.
About you
  • You have extensive scientific and technical experience in the field of cytometry, with a special focus on spectral flow cytometry and cell sorting. Experience with sorting, mass cytometry, spectral flow cytometry, and conventional flow cytometry is a must. You are able to support researchers from experimental setup and panel design to instrument operation and data analysis and have knowledge of advanced data analysis methods for high dimensional cytometry data and proficiency in computational tools.
  • You are an active member of the international cytometry community.
  • You have good organizational and communication skills to advise and support several researchers in the use of advanced cytometry techniques and data analysis. You are able to implement innovations in the field well and quickly.
  • You are highly independent and have ample knowledge in practical laboratory work, handling complex equipment, coordinating daily operations, interacting with the technical team of instrument suppliers, providing service to other researchers, and providing technical reporting in written or presentation form.

The Department of Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology (MCBI) at the Amsterdam UMC (VUmc location) at the southwest edge of the city carries out research at an internationally competitive level and offers a stimulating and collegial work environment.
