The project

Psychiatric disorders are increasingly understood as disorders of brain networks, in which symptoms arise from altered communication between distributed neural systems. At the same time, neurotransmitter systems play a key role in brain function and psychiatric treatment. Despite their importance, neurochemical processes are rarely incorporated into network-level models of human brain function.

This postdoctoral project is part of a broader research programme that combines ultra-high-field (7T) MRI, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and functional connectivity analyses. The programme investigates how neurotransmitter systems relate to large-scale brain networks and functional brain dynamics, both at rest and during experimental interventions.

Depending on your expertise and interests, you will contribute to methodological developments, such as the characterization and validation of functional MRS (fMRS) signals, the integration of neurochemical and functional connectivity measures, and the application of these methods to questions in psychiatric neuroscience.

About your role

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work at the intersection of neuroimaging, computational modelling and psychiatry. You will actively contribute to the development and direction of a growing research programme.

Your responsibilities include:

  • acquisition and analysis of advanced MRI data, including fMRI, fMRS and MRSI;
  • evaluation and validation of neurochemical MRI measures, including the sensitivity, specificity and temporal characteristics of fMRS signals;
  • integration of neurochemical and functional connectivity data using statistical and computational approaches;
  • collaboration with physicists, computational neuroscientists and clinicians in an interdisciplinary research environment;
  • dissemination of research findings through scientific publications, conference presentations and collaborative projects.
About you

You are an independent and proactive researcher with a strong interest in mechanistic questions within psychiatry and experience in neuroimaging or computational neuroscience.

You also have:

  • a PhD in computational neuroscience, functional neuroimaging, physics, engineering or a related field;
  • experience with MRI data analysis, preferably including MRS and/or fMRI;
  • strong quantitative, statistical and programming skills, including experience developing or adapting analysis and simulation pipelines;
  • experience leading methodological or conceptual research projects, such as multimodal data integration, modelling or fMRS signal characterization;
  • experience with scientific writing, publishing and supervising or mentoring junior researchers. Experience with MRI pulse programming, for example on Philips systems, is considered an advantage.
Our offer
  • You will be employed by Amsterdam UMC Research BV.
  • A contract for 12 months, with the intention to extend for a total of at least 2.5 years.
  • Classification in salary scale 10: € 3.598 to € 5.669 gross for full-time employment (depending on experience). In addition to a good basic salary, we offer 8.3% end-of-year bonus. • Holiday hours: 194.4 per year for full time and a possibility to save additional hours.
  • 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs. If you travel by foot, bicycle, or car, a mileage allowance of €0.21 per km applies (up to a maximum of 40 km one way).
  • Do you prefer walking or cycling? Take advantage of our good bike scheme.
  • Pension accrual with BeFrank, a modern, comprehensible and fairly priced pension.

About your workplace

You will join the department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, an internationally recognised centre for medical research with state-of-the-art imaging and neuroscience facilities.

You will be embedded in the Neurometabolic and Functional lab, a multidisciplinary research group dedicated to understanding how neurotransmitters, brain networks and interventions interact to improve patient outcomes. The team brings together expertise in neuroimaging, neuroscience, psychiatry and computational modelling.

The department maintains extensive national and international collaborations, offering excellent opportunities to expand your scientific network and develop into an independent researcher. You will work in an open and stimulating research environment with cutting-edge equipment and a team of enthusiastic and committed colleagues.

Amsterdam UMC Research BV

Amsterdam UMC Research BV supports non-profit scientific research. In doing so, we provide researchers with everything they need to excel. Our principal investigators (PIs) and project leaders offer support in the field of project management, finance and human resources. In medical scientific research projects, legal support is also provided.
