About your role

The Post Doc position will be focused on sepsis, transfusion and ECMO related topics in the intensive care setting. We have currently several studies running including;

  • Immunosep - investigating personalized immunotherapy in sepsis.
  • Histosep – Phase I study using heparin like drug to reduced histones during sepsis
  • INPUT study – Worldwide prospective study on transfusion practice in the ICU.
  • TRALI/TACO – prospective studies and laboratory studies on the pathophysiology of these life threatening syndromes
  • ECMO – Several randomized trials and prospective observational studies on indications and optimalization of ECMO therapy  

The Post Doc will be responsible for initiating and supervising several of these trials including the coordination with the other participating centers. The trials are funded by e.g. NWO (VIDI), ZonMw (Doelmatigheid), ELSO. In addition to the research, the Post Doc will be responsible for supervising PhDs, writing deliverable reports and scientific articles, writing grant applications and will be participating in national and international scientific meetings. We offer a pleasant and challenging learning environment. The Post Doc will have significant interaction with the other Post Docs and PhD students of our research group.

The project

About you
  • Medical Degree has a preference
  • PhD degree
  • affinity with intensive care medicine, and running clinical trials
  • excellent organizational skills
  • knowledge of SPSS/excel/R data processing is an advantage
  • previous research experience in the field is an advantage
  • fluent in Dutch and English (written and spoken)
  • effective team-player in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • capable to work independently and reliably, with a good share of enthusiasm
  • capable to supervise PhD projects
  • capable to apply for own research funding

The Intensive Care department of the Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam (part of Amsterdam UMC) occupies a leading position internationally in its field of research and participate in a large number of cooperative programs with universities, research institutes and industry. One of the main research lines is the broad field of sepsis, transfusion and ECMO. The research group of the Department of Intensive Care and the Laboratory of Experimental Intensive Care and Anesthesiology exists of a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in internal medicine, anesthesiology, intensive care medicine and biochemistry.
