The project

This project incorporates fundamental research questions as well as translational applications in in vitro models and patient material. This project will be performed at the MS Center Amsterdam in the Neuro-immunology research group at the Department of Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology (location VUmc; O|2 Lab Building) of prof. Elga de Vries in collaboration with the Neurology department (dr. Eva Strijbis).

The project is funded by a grant from Dutch MS research Foundation and is embedded in the Amsterdam Neuroscience research institute.

About your role

The immune system takes active part in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent evidence from the Neuro-immunology research group at the MS Center Amsterdam of Amsterdam UMC now suggests that natural killer (NK) cells play a yet unidentified role in the progression of MS.

The successful candidate will unravel if and how NK cells drive impaired peripheral and central immune homeostasis in MS and uncover how NK cells interact with various brain barriers and brain cells using a variety of unique human in vitro models and patient material while applying high-dimensional single-cell techniques and high end microscopy.

About you

We are looking for a highly driven, motivated and enthusiastic researcher with:

  • A master’s degree in a field related to biomedical sciences, neuroscience and/or immunology;
  • Affinity for immunology and neuroscience;
  • Interest in high-dimensional technologies and pushing the boundaries of research through technology-driven applications;
  • Experience with in vitro models, programming and iPSC technology is a plus;
  • You have a flexible, pro-active team spirit but you can also work independently;
  • Excellent communications skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness/openness to collaborate with (inter)national researchers.
Our offer
  • The intended start date for the project is October 1st 2022.
  • The position is for 4 years. We first offer a fixed term contract for 1 year, which under normal circumstances will be prolonged with 3 years. We also provide you with the opportunity to follow further training and development.
  • Besides a good basic salary, you will also receive an 8.3% year-end bonus and 8% holiday allowance. Calculate your net salary here.

The MS Center Amsterdam is a multidisciplinary center within Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc in which more than 100 researchers from different disciplines cooperate. Our mission is to give people with MS a normal daily life without being limited by their disease. The combination of fundamental, applied and clinical research gives us the possibility to quickly apply results into the care for people with MS. The center has an excellent international reputation and is one of the top three MS research centers in the world.
