The project

You will join the Dementia Discovery Group (https://fga.cncr.nl/research_teams/dementia_discovery_group/) at the  Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research in Amsterdam (see www.cncr.nl). This is a highly international group of researchers interested in the biological pathways underlying Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The mission of the Dementia Discovery Group is to understand the basic mechanisms of cellular dysfunction in these diseases in an internationally competitive level, and apply these findings towards novel treatment approaches in a (pre)clincial setting.

About your role

Microglia are major players in the early steps of Alzheimer’s Disease pathogenesis, but how they contribute to disease remains unknown. In this project you will use gene-edited iPSC-derived microglia to understand how Alzheimer’s disease risk genes cause microglial dysfunction. You will generate and integrate -omics data from disease-driving and protective microglia to uncover novel pathways that lead to microglial dysfunction. Using genetic and pharmaceutical interventions your will uncover the cell biology behind these pathways and define novel targets to treat immunometabolic dysfunction of microglia in Alzheimer’s disease.  As part of a collaborative effort directed by the Dementia Discovery Group and partners, you will also contribute to the open-access dissemination of the omics results and collaboration on related projects with other (inter)national labs.

About you

The ideal candidate should have a master’s degree in biomedical sciences, neuroscience or biology. The candidate should have experience with wet-lab work including cell culture (preferentially iPSC-derived cell cultures or primary microglia) and a strong interest in metabolism and/or immune function. The ideal candidate has experience with analysis of omics data, or at least experience or affinity with bioinformatic approaches and programming in R. You like to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of peers and international scientists, have excellent organizing and communication skill and a strong motivation to pursue a career in science.
