Interventional radiology is one of the focal points of the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at Amsterdam UMC and ties in with the cardiovascular focal point of Amsterdam UMC. There is a staff of 11 interventional radiologists, whose members work in one or both locations depending on their areas of interest.
Within the department, interventional radiologists work very closely together, with all vascular interventional radiology concentrated at the AMC site. At this location, in addition to vascular interventional radiology, vascular surgery, vascular medicine and cardiology are concentrated, creating the largest (cardio)vascular center in the Netherlands where, in addition to interventional radiologists, 11 vascular surgeons are also employed. At the AMC location, interventional radiology has 2 state-of-the-art intervention rooms, 1 CT scanner and 2 hybrid ORs, located in the OR complex next to the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine (a hybrid OR was completely renovated at the beginning of this year). Furthermore, there is a recovery room with 6 beds and there are 4 in-house nurses and admission facilities in the short-stay facility at the department.
Within the Amsterdam UMC, vascular interventional radiology works closely with, among others, the departments of Vascular surgery (e.g. peripheral vascular disease, (complex) aneurysms, carotid pathology), Vascular medicine (venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism), Cardiology (pulmonary hypertension), Nephrology (dialysis shunts, complex vascular access), Plastic surgery (congenital vascular malformations), Gynecology (uterine pathology) and Traumatology (traumatic vascular injury).
Furthermore, at the VUMC location interventional radiologists work intensively with oncological and HPB surgery, gatroenterology and hepatology, medical oncology and urology in the non-vascular and oncological fields. In addition to the entire palette of vascular, non-vascular and oncological interventions at both sites, there is also a strong focus on multidisciplinary consultation (MDT), peri-procedural care and involvement in multidisciplinary outpatient clinics.
